Hearing God in the Noise: Prayer, Risk, and the Gen Z Revival

"The provision of the Lord is on the pathway of obedience."

If there is one sentence that encapsulates the journey of Josh Green, the co-founder of GenZeil, it is that one.

In a recent episode of the P3 Hub Podcast, host Lance Peppler sat down with Josh for a conversation that felt less like a standard interview and more like a masterclass in stepping out in faith. From the streets of Manchester to the cutting edge of youth ministry, Josh and his wife Emma have spent nearly two decades equipping the next generation to encounter Jesus.

In this episode, we dove deep into the three pillars of P3 - Prayer, Power, and Proclamation - to uncover what it looks like to live a life fully surrendered to the Holy Spirit.

Redefining Prayer: From Communication to Communion

We often complicate prayer. We treat it like a transaction or a formal address to a distant dignitary. But when Lance asked Josh to define prayer, his answer cut through the religious noise.

"Prayer is communion, not just communication," Josh explained. "It’s a heart-to-heart connection with the Lord on a deep level. True prayer starts in the heart, not the mouth."

This distinction changes everything. If prayer is merely communication, it can feel like leaving voicemails for God. But if it is communion, it implies a two-way relationship - a shared space where we exist with God. It validates the age-old saying that Christianity isn’t a religion; it’s a relationship.

When we view prayer as communion, we stop just speaking at God and start listening to Him. And that raises the next big question: How do we actually hear Him?

Decoding the Voice of God

One of the most common frustrations for believers is the silence. We pray, we wait, and we hear... nothing. Or so we think.

Josh shared a beautiful perspective on Psalm 121: "I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord."

"We can take inspiration from creation," Josh noted. When we look at the hills - or the mountains, or the sky - we are reminded that if God could create all of that, He can certainly break through in our situation.

But beyond creation, God speaks through His Word. Josh described the experience of a verse that just "pops" out at you. It’s that moment when the logos (the written word) becomes rhema (the spoken word for right now).

"Isaiah 55:11 is one of those for me," Josh shared. "So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me void, but it will accomplish what I please."

However, Josh challenged us to broaden our spiritual bandwidth. God doesn’t just speak in quiet times. He speaks through podcasts, through friends, and sometimes, through the utterly bizarre.

"God spoke through a donkey in the Bible," Josh laughed. "I would encourage people to look for God in every situation. Open up your ears. Ask yourself: Is God trying to say something through this?"

The Leap of Faith

Perhaps the most powerful moment of the podcast was Josh recounting the origin story of Gen Zeal. He and his wife felt called to step out in faith, leave their salaries behind, and launch a ministry to ignite a fire in Gen Z.

The decision was terrifying. They have three kids. They needed a building. The maths didn’t add up.

Josh found himself at a "Prayer Storm" conference in Manchester, wrestling with God. He felt the Holy Spirit urging him to step out, but he wanted a sign. A big one. "I was sitting there saying, 'God, let someone call me out from the stage. If this is you, let someone say, Josh Green, do it now.'". It didn't happen at the conference but the very next day, a preacher - who didn’t know Josh’s internal struggle - stopped in the middle of her sermon titled Do It Now. She pointed him out and said, "What God has told you to do, Josh Green, do it now.". Twenty-four hours later, he had received the confirmation he asked for, almost word-for-word.

It was a reminder that God is willing to confirm His word, but we have to be willing to take the risk. As an older, wise woman told Josh during that season: "The provision of the Lord is on the pathway of obedience."

You cannot wait for the provision to arrive before you start walking. You have to step onto the path of obedience first. Is the Gen Z Revival Real?

There is a lot of chatter online about revival. Is it hype? Is it emotionalism? Or is God actually moving among the younger generation?

Josh’s answer was emphatic: "Something is happening."

He warned against getting hung up on the terminology. Whether you call it "revival," "awakening," or just a "stirring," the evidence is undeniable.

"I’ve been in youth ministry for nearly 20 years," Josh said. "And when I look at what I’m seeing now, I’ve never seen anything like this before."

He shared a story that should give every believer goosebumps. His daughter, having just started high school, joined a Christian Union (CU) of just four students. A few months later, that group had grown to twenty.

But here is the miraculous part: After his daughter’s best friend got baptised, two other friends - unchurched, secular high schoolers - came to school with a strange report. They had both dreamed that Jesus came to them and baptised them. They woke up feeling physically wet, covered head-to-toe in water.

"Two separate young people. Woke up from dreams, covered in water. That is Acts chapter 2 stuff," Josh said. "God is breaking out in the high schools."

We are seeing young people wandering into churches with no background in faith, simply because they feel "drawn." They are waking up to the reality of Jesus in a way that marketing strategies and cool events could never achieve.

Your Invitation to Step Out

So, what does this mean for you?

Whether you are a student, a parent, a business owner, or a retiree, the principles remain the same. We are called to:

Pray with Intimacy: Move from reciting lists to communing with the Father.
Listen with Expectancy: Look for His voice in the Bible, in nature, and even in the noise of your daily life.
Walk in Obedience: Don’t wait for the perfect conditions. Step out. The provision you need is waiting on the path of obedience.

As Josh mentioned, GenZeal is currently in a massive season of faith, launching a Prayer and Missions school in January 2027. They have taken a building, raised funds, and are trusting God for the rest.
